Overview

A heating mat raises the temperature of a small incubation area by a few degrees, which speeds colonisation and stabilises it through cold nights. It is most useful during colonisation rather than fruiting, since many species fruit better at cooler ambient temperatures. A thermostat matters more than the mat's raw output.

Safety & handling

Never place a mat in direct contact with a sealed bag or in a closed, insulated box without a thermostat. Uncontrolled mats can push surface temperatures well above the range mycelium survives.

Practical advice

Use the mat to warm the air in an enclosure rather than the substrate directly. Warm air around a jar is gentler and far less likely to cook the culture.
