Overview

Straw pellets are milled straw compressed into dense cylinders. They hydrate in a fraction of the time whole straw takes, drain consistently, and hold an open structure that mycelium threads through well. They are the most practical bulk substrate for oyster mushrooms in a home set-up.

Primary stage: Colonization

Where it fits in the grow

Hydrated, drained, pasteurised and cooled before spawning.

Safety & handling

Straw that smells musty or shows dark mould has already begun composting and will almost always contaminate. Reject any bale that is damp or discoloured.

Practical advice

Drain thoroughly — straw should be damp to the touch but must not stream water when a handful is squeezed. Excess water creates anaerobic pockets bacteria love.
