Overview

Hardwood sawdust from species such as oak, maple or beech is the primary bulk substrate for shiitake, oyster and lion's mane. Particle size governs how much air and water the block can hold, so grade matters as much as species. It is usually supplemented with bran to raise the available nitrogen.

Hydrated, supplemented, bagged and sterilised before inoculation.

Safety & handling

Fresh sawdust from treated lumber or pressure-treated timber must never be used — it carries chemical preservatives. Source from untreated woodworking or a reputable supplier.

Practical advice

Avoid dust from a workshop that also cuts softwoods or composite board. Even a small fraction of resinous or glue-bearing dust suppresses mycelial growth.
