Overview

A mixing tub is simply a large food-grade container wide enough to turn a full substrate recipe by hand. Wide is more useful than deep, because you need room to lift and fold material from the bottom to the top. A tub you can move while loaded matters more than one with a lid.

Used to hydrate, amend and blend substrate before bagging.

Safety & handling

Never use a tub that previously held household chemicals. Residual pesticide or detergent film will inhibit or kill mycelium even after washing.

Practical advice

Fill from the bottom and fold upward rather than stirring in circles. Folding gives you an even distribution of amendments in half the time.
