Overview

An inoculation loop is a thin wire formed into a small ring at the end of a handle. Flamed until it glows, it is the classic tool for moving a tiny, precise amount of mycelium from one plate to another or for streaking a spore suspension across agar.

Used during agar transfers and plate-to-plate cleaning.

Safety & handling

A freshly flamed loop is extremely hot and is invisible in most lighting. Let it cool for five seconds or touch it to the agar edge before picking up culture, or you will kill the transfer.

Practical advice

Hold the loop steady and draw a short line rather than a wide smear. Thin, deliberate streaks separate individual colonies and make clean isolation much easier.
